Split runs by percentage for A/B testing

Split, in a Choose a path step, sends each run down a path by percentages you set, such as 50% and 50%, so you can compare two welcome messages or share clients between two teams.

Steps

1
Press Add a step, choose Choose a path, then choose Split under How records pick a path.
2
Press Add a path until you have 2 to 5 paths.
3
Give each path its Share of records, as a whole number, adding up to 100%.
4
Name the paths, or they’re named A, B and C.
5
Connect each path to its steps.

How it works

The same record always goes to the same path, even when the run is retried or resumed.

Changing the split’s “seed” reshuffles records between the paths.

A split has no conditions and no Everyone else path.

If you turn off the step, everyone goes to path A.

The number of runs for each path shows in The run estimate before you turn an automation on.

What you see
Why
What to do
“Make the shares add up to 100%”
The total isn’t 100, or a percentage has a fraction.
Correct the percentages.
“The number of paths doesn’t match the percentages”
A path has no percentage.
Give every path a percentage.
“A split doesn’t accept conditions”
You added a condition.
Delete the condition, or use Rules in a Choose a path step.

A real example

Namaa Academy
The situation

The academy doesn’t know which welcome message works better.

What they did
  1. A 50/50 split: a “Short” path and a “Detailed” path.
  2. Each path sends its message, then waits a day for a reply.
The result

After two weeks, the academy knew which message gets more replies.

A made-up company, to show the idea. The numbers are rounded.

Good to know

2 to 5 paths.
Each percentage is from 1 to 99, and the total is exactly 100.
