Steps

1
Open the catalog field’s settings → Default value.
2
Choose the products you want by default, and in line items mode, set the quantity and the tax rate.
3
Save.
When a new record is created, the lines show ready, with the current catalog prices, the subtotal, the tax and the total.

How it works

Default lines follow the same rules as picking by hand: they’re priced at the catalog price at the moment the record is created, and their names and units are copied. If one of the default products was deleted, or the person creating the record isn’t allowed to see it, it’s skipped, and the record is still created.

Saving the field’s settings without touching the default value keeps it as it is. To clear it, delete the lines from the default value box.

A real example

Shield Security Co.
The situation

Every quote needs an “Inspection visit” line, and employees forget it.

What they did
  1. They made “Inspection visit”, with a quantity of 1, a default line in the line items field.
The result

Every new quote starts with the inspection line, and the employee deletes it only if it isn’t needed.

A made-up company, to show the idea. The numbers are rounded.

Good to know

They apply only when a record is created, and don’t change old records.
Calculation, Serial Number and Relation fields don’t have a default value box.
