Turn auto-read on or off

With auto-read on, a chat is marked read as soon as you open it, and the client sees the read mark. With it off, the chat stays unread until you mark it yourself.

Steps

1
Open Cortex Chat and press the auto-read button (the eye icon) in the inbox header.
With one connected session, the setting switches straight away. With more than one, the Auto Mark Read panel opens.
2
If the panel opened, choose the session, then press Turn Off Auto-Read or Turn On Auto-Read.
Point at the button to see the state: Auto-read ON — chats are marked as read when opened or Auto-read OFF — chats stay unread until manually marked shows.

How it works

The setting is for each session separately, and it’s on by default when the session is created.

Turn it off if you don’t want the client to know you’ve read their message before you’ve prepared a reply, or if your team uses “Unread” as a to-do list. See Cortex Chat: your complete guide to the inbox.

On WhatsApp Cloud: when it’s off, the client doesn’t see the “typing...” indicator either, because Meta marks the message read along with the indicator.

A real example

Basma Clinics
The situation

Patients get annoyed when they see the read mark and don’t get a reply straight away.

What they did
  1. The clinic turned off auto-read on the reception number.
  2. The receptionist marks the chat read when she replies.
The result

There are fewer “You saw my message and didn’t reply” messages.

A made-up company, to show the idea. The numbers are rounded.

Good to know

The setting is at the session level, so it affects every teammate on that session.
