Variables: put record data in messages and fields
Press Insert a detail in any text of an automation to add a variable, which shows as a grey word. A variable is replaced by its value when the automation runs, and an empty variable prints as nothing.

An empty variable
A variable with no value prints as nothing, and the client never sees the {{...}} text. The run log lists it under “Unresolved variables”.
In a record update, a value made only of empty variables isn’t written. In a WhatsApp template, an empty required variable blocks sending.
{{ variables in an email’s body are inserted safely, without breaking the formatting.

The situation
Reminder messages were generic and impersonal.
What they did
- The text: “Hello {{name}}, the maintenance visit to {{site.name}} is on {{visit_date}}. Your engineer: {{__assignee_name}}.”
The result
Every client gets a message with their name, their site and their engineer.
A made-up company, to show the idea. The numbers are rounded.

Relation variables go up to 2 levels.
